The Safe and Effective Use of Procedural Sedation:

This sedation course is an Internet-based application that delivers to non-anesthesia healthcare providers a video-based education and training on safe sedation practices. The program provides practitioners with education required for safe moderate sedation drug delivery based upon standardized operational guidelines. It will also provide a thorough review of the drugs used, their advantages and disadvantages, and the safe administration of these agents. The training program is designed for practitioners to become properly trained, qualified and approved to administer sedation in their facilities.

This activity has been developed for non-anesthesia healthcare providers- Physicians, Registered Nurses, Physician Assistants (Practitioners) who administer and monitor patient sedation in locations outside of the Operating Room (e.g., Cath Lab, GI Lab, Radiology, out-patient ambulatory locations/practices)

The goal is to foster proficiency and confidence through continuing education and training. Participants will learn to maintain and enhance their administration skills, techniques and knowledge to provide safe sedation. Successful completion of the sedation course (80% on examination) will serve as a necessary credential for performing moderate sedation in areas outside of the Operating Room and will be a necessary requirement for those physicians requesting this privilege on appointment or reappointment. In order to successfully pass the course, the individual must demonstrate proficiency in the defined areas. Therefore, this equivalency training can enhance successful outcomes.

After participating in this activity, participants should be able to:
  1. Identify the anatomic, physiologic and pathophysiologic considerations associated with the moderate sedation to ensure safe patient care.
  2. Recognize and effectively manage patients experiencing respiratory insufficiency, airway obstruction and/or hemodynamic changes to reduce untoward patient reactions.
  3. Recall the appropriate; patient selection, monitoring equipment, personnel that must be present in an area in which a patient is sedated, and the required documentation for record keeping.
  4. Recognize the uses and side effects of commonly used sedatives, anxiolytics and other medications when administered alone and in combination for moderate sedation.
  5. Participate in data gathering and performance improvement initiatives.

North Shore-LIJ Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for physicians.

The North Shore-LIJ Health System designates this Continuing Medical Education activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category I credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

To receive credit, the participant must:

  1. Register for the Course
  2. View "The Safe and Effective Use of Procedural Sedation" in its entirety.
  3. Answer at least 80% of the post test questions correctly.
